Attic ventilation is one idea wearing a great many product names. Cool outside air comes in low, at the soffit under the eave. Warm damp air leaves high, at or near the ridge. The two should be roughly equal, and where they're uneven the balance should favor intake, because a roof can't exhaust more air than it can pull in.

This whole list is why a ventilation answer comes from inside the attic. There's nothing on it that can be settled from the driveway.

  • Frost or rust on the points of the nails coming through the sheathing, which means damp air's condensing up there on cold nights
  • Dark gray or black staining across the deck's underside, usually worst near the ridge
  • An upstairs room that never cools down in summer whatever the thermostat's set to
  • Insulation pushed out into the eaves and packed against the soffit vents, which starves the intake side
  • A row of icicles and a ridge of ice along the gutter line after a snow that partly melted
  • Shingles curling or blistering on the plane that takes the most sun, ahead of the rest of the roof

Two or three of these together usually point at the intake side, and that's the half most attics are short of.

Snow melts high, freezes low, and Overland Park gets ice dams

Can a ridge vent and gable vents both stay?
Mixing two kinds of exhaust on one attic is the most common ventilation mistake there is. Air takes the easiest path, so a ridge vent and a gable vent end up pulling from each other: the weaker one stops exhausting and becomes intake, and the deck's lower part never sees fresh air. Pick one exhaust type and pair it with enough intake down at the soffit.
Do powered attic fans help?
Powered fans move more air than anything else on the list, and that's also their problem. A fan sized past the intake available to it will pull conditioned air up out of the house, or pull weather in backward through a ridge vent. On most houses, opening up the soffit intake and running a continuous ridge vent beats adding a motor.
Why does adding more exhaust fail to fix a hot attic?
Exhaust can't move air the attic has no way to take in. A roof with plenty of ridge vent and insulation packed over the soffits is a closed system: the vents are open and nothing's moving through them. That's why a roofer checks the intake side first, and why it's usually the side that ends up with the work.
Will fixing the venting stop ice dams?
Balanced ventilation greatly reduces ice dams without promising to end them. Keeping the deck cold removes the cause; sealing air leaks at the ceiling and getting the insulation depth right removes the rest. In a Kansas winter's repeated melt and freeze cycles, an ice barrier membrane at the eaves is what protects the roof when a dam forms anyway.
